In the Light

Every night —the darkness.
And many nights I fear.
What of love, what of light?
It seems not present here.

Every night — the shadows.
And many nights I’m wrong.
The walls quiver and crumble
And my heart quakes right along.

Every night — the despair.
It taps my soul with taunts.
“The world is deep with sin,
The men and women die.
Evil has grown its roots,
Light will never win.”

Every night — I remember the trees.
Dappled with shadow
Cold in the afternoon
But with light on their leaves;
straining with their highest branches
To touch the golden sun.

And- peace! the darkness flees my sight
Never in the shadows will I forget
what I knew to be truth in the light.
